Woods said he began to suffer from plantar fasciitis, inflammation that causes heel pain, while ramping up to play in the Hero World Challenge, a tournament that benefits his charity, TGR Foundation.
About nine months after the crash, Woods revealed in an interview with Golf Digest there was a moment during the immediate aftermath that amputating his leg was a serious possibility.
Woods had a fifth back surgery in December of 2020, another microdiscectomy to remove a bone fragment that was pinching a nerve.
Unlike his other surgeries, that procedure was a lumbar fusion. Tiger had three prior lumbar discectomies, all done from a posterior approach. His latest surgery is called an anterior lumbar interbody fusion.
Tiger Woods is currently dealing with plantar fasciitis. But ever since his car crash, he's battled no shortage of health problems. Woods was able to return last year and play a decent brand of golf, but he was ultimately forced to withdraw from an event and has been held out of competitive play since summer.
Woods has also had five surgeries on his left knee—the one he famously tore before winning the 2008 U.S. Open—and most recently an arthroscopic procedure to clear scar tissue in August 2019.
The common condition – more than 2 million people in the U.S. are treated for it each year, according to the Cleveland Clinic – causes a stabbing pain near the heel. Woods said Thursday that he will not pursue surgery for the condition, rather opting for the more common “stretch and relax” method of recovery.
Woods said that he underwent the surgical operation because one of his discs had become very narrow due to previous disc herniations and subsequent surgeries.

This is the fifth career knee procedure for Woods on his left knee. He's also undergone four surgeries on his back.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department indicated on Tuesday that Woods would have been transported to a facility other than Harbor-UCLA, a tier 1 trauma center, had his injuries been life-threatening. Instead, he landed at Harbor-UCLA for surgery on numerous substantial injuries in his lower right leg.
